A group of French publishers use tools to detect AI in manuscripts

Les Nouveaux Editeurs (LNE), a “independent” group of French publishers, joined by former Hachette Livre Chief Arnault Noli last June, formed a partnership with self-publishing company Librinova to detect the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the author's manuscripts.

LNE publisher La Tribu has been using Librinova's AI management tools in testing for several months. Other homes in the group will soon be offered the possibility to get the tools.

The partnership is “a clear move for these two innovative actors who are paying particular attention to the evolution of the sector, the authors and the way they write,” they said in a joint statement this week.

They added that as Book Publishing faces the “exponential” use of AI, it is important to know the role it played in the practice of the text or author's work. “The goal is not to systematically reject manuscripts written with the help of AI, but to get a closer look at the content (publisher) teams have received, read and considered,” the statement added.

With the release of the three-stage label Création Humaine last year, Librinova claims to be at the cutting edge of AI use in its publications.

The algorithm first selects representative passages and converts them into digital data or tokens. Machine learning then analyzes the passages of style and regression tests via text-created “gaps” to see if a large-scale language model (LLM) finds missing words. Finally, the results of the two steps are cross-referenced and detected with “maximum accuracy”.

Librinova was founded 10 years ago and is supported by a committee of experts and 200 readers. It says that thanks to a network of over 100 publishers, there is an open way to publish contracts.
