Scale AI, a leading provider of data infrastructure for artificial intelligence, is built to take advantage of the gaps in the machine learning pipeline they have identified.
The company's early traction came from racing clients to adopt AI, including AI, self-driving cars, robotics, AR/VR, mapping, but has expanded to other industries. Its product is a comprehensive tool that integrates annotations, synthetic data generation and model evaluation.
One of its biggest moves is to fork into the defense industry, particularly in a groundbreaking deal with the Department of Defense's Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office last August. The partnership will improve the Department of Defense's efforts to improve the US military's AI capabilities. The scope of the project includes the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard.
Scale AI also announced a multi-million dollar new contract with DOD in March, supporting Thunderforge, an initiative to develop AI agents for US military planning and operations, including the first destroyer of the year Andrill. The program partners with technology companies to develop and deploy AI agents used for modeling and simulation, decision support, proposed action courses, and automated workflows. It will be used by the US Indo-Pacific Command and the US European Command team, and plans to expand to other groups.
In April, Scale provided AI services for education, civil servants, tourism, healthcare and transportation to close the five-year agreement with Qatar.
In July 2024, we became AWS' first model customization and evaluation partner. This will help the company's clients change and improve their generated AI models.
“Our appeal is to build a data foundry for AI… to accelerate the abundance of frontier data that paves the way for AGI,” founder and CEO Alexandr Wang said in his latest fundraising blog post. The May 2024 $1 billion Series F gave the company a $14 billion valuation, including Cisco Investments, Amazon and Meta as new investors in the company.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, Meta is considering much larger investments in scale AI up to $10 billion.
As the AI industry grows, more questions are raised about how these systems are trained, particularly in essentially controversial military applications, whether they remain ethical and unbiased without human opinion. In September 2024, Scale partnered with the AI Safety Center to help create the “The Last Examination of Humanity,” a project aimed at creating AI benchmarks for the industry.
