Samsung's future AI smartphones will be 'radically different' from existing phones: report

Samsung is reportedly working on new artificial intelligence (AI) smartphones that could be “radically different” from the company's existing smartphones. The development was revealed by Samsung's mobile division chief in an interaction with the publication. The report also adds that Samsung is investing heavily in research and development for these new AI smartphones. However, it is unclear whether these will be launched as a separate smartphone lineup or as replacements for the company's current flagship smartphones.

Samsung reportedly developing a new AI smartphone

TM Lo, president and head of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Experience (MX) business, told the Australian Financial Review that the South Korean tech giant is currently focusing on developing new AI smartphones that “may be fundamentally different from Samsung's existing phones.” He did not specify what would be different about these phones.

According to the report, Lu also emphasized that the “vast majority” of Samsung MX's research and development efforts are focused on the development of these new devices. Despite hinting at big changes to these new AI-powered smartphones, he did not explain what these changes mean. These changes could mean new form factors, larger or smaller displays, new sensors, or the incorporation of a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

Notably, earlier this month, the tech giant globally launched the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Apart from iterative hardware upgrades and a new hinge mechanism, these smartphones also introduced new AI features under the Galaxy AI umbrella.

An interesting feature is the Galaxy Z Fold 6's “Sketch to Image” which uses the S Pen to allow users to draw rough sketches which are then transformed into realistic art using AI. “Note Assist” which can record, transcribe and summarize audio has also been added to both devices.

The clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes with a new ProVisual Engine for its AI-powered camera, which can detect objects, analyze lighting conditions, and isolate facial features to improve image quality. The AI ​​can optimize images and improve the quality of objects even at the 10x zoom range.
