Following Google's recent launch of its GenAI chatbot Gemini, Meta has announced the rollout of its AI assistant to users in India. The rollout marks a significant step towards improving user experience across Meta's platforms.
Expanding AI capabilities
Indian users of WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram can now utilize Meta's AI assistant for a range of features including GenAI-enabled search, assistance, information retrieval, etc. The company detailed these features in a recent announcement, highlighting the seamless integration of AI into everyday interactions on the platforms.
Equipped with Meta Llama 3
Meta AI is powered by Meta's state-of-the-art open source large-scale language model, Meta Llama 3. This advanced technology puts Meta on par with other global technology giants deploying AI assistants such as Google's Gemini, Microsoft's Copilot, Amazon's Alexa, and OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Global expansion
Since its launch in April, Meta AI has been rolled out in English to users in over 12 countries outside the U.S. These countries include Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The initial pilot in April allowed select Indian users on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger to try out the new AI features.
Seamless Integration
One of Meta AI's distinguishing features is its accessibility. Users do not need to install any additional applications; the AI assistant is available directly within feeds, chats, search and more across Meta's social media apps. This integration allows users to access real-time information and complete tasks without leaving the app they are currently using.
Meta Verified Program Expansion
In related news, Meta announced it is expanding its Meta Verified program to WhatsApp Business users in India, Indonesia, Brazil, and Colombia. Announced at Meta's annual business messaging event, “Conversations,” the subscription service is designed to increase business credibility and drive engagement and brand growth.
India's GenAI market is growing
Meta AI's introduction comes at a time when India's GenAI market is poised for significant growth; according to Inc42, the market is expected to exceed $17 billion by 2030. More than 100 GenAI startups have sprung up in India, raising more than $600 million in total since 2019. Leading this wave are companies like SarvamAI and Krutrim, which are developing Indian language models, and ObserveAI, which secured $214 million to provide customized customer and operational support through AI.
