Abstract
- The speed has increased. Claude 3.5 Sonnet runs twice as fast as its predecessor, improving performance on complex tasks.
- Real-time collaboration. Artifact allows users to edit and build on AI-generated content, supporting a dynamic workspace.
- Enhanced coding. Claude 3.5 Sonnet provides sophisticated reasoning for coding and improves code conversion and updates.
Much of the recent AI news has been centered around GPT-4, a new model of ChatGPT, Apple’s partnership with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into Siri, and the expansion of Google’s Gemini application and upgrades announced at Google I/O.
But another AI provider is looking to surpass the media attention that OpenAI and Google have received: Anthropic has announced an upgrade to its generative AI system, Claude. The new model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, arrives just three months after the Claude 3 model family was released in March. Hoping to get a leg up in the AI race, Anthropic promises that the new model will deliver performance on par with or better than its AI competitors.
“I'll say it: Anthropic is killing OpenAI right now,” Thomas Laird, CEO of contact center outsourcing company Expivia, said on LinkedIn. “The race is still early, but Claude is beating ChatGPT in the first poll. They don't have a marketing budget, so people are getting scammed.”
What is Claude's latest upgrade? Sonnet sings an AI song
Claude 3.5 Sonnet is the first release in a series of models based on the Claude 3.5 model. Sonnet is available for free on Claude.ai and the Claude iOS app.
Just as ChatGPT Plus and Gemini Advanced charge subscription fees for advanced performance, Claude Pro and Team plans are also available, giving paid subscribers access to significantly higher rate limits and priority access during high traffic times.
Faster
Sonnet, an upgrade from Claude, offers better performance than its predecessor, running twice as fast as Claude 3 Opus. The increased speed makes Claude 3.5 Sonnet ideal for complex tasks like contextual customer support and orchestrating multi-step workflows.
More sophisticated reasoning for coding
Anthropic focused on evaluating Claude 3.5 Sonnet against standard programming workflow problems, testing the Claude upgrade's ability to evaluate specific natural language descriptions of desired improvements and deliver meaningful results, such as bug fixes and feature additions to the open source codebase.
As a result, Anthropic promises that Claude 3.5 Sonnet will be able to write, edit, and run code on its own with advanced reasoning and troubleshooting capabilities. Anthropic's web page claims that Claude “handles code conversions with ease, making it particularly effective for updating legacy applications or migrating codebases.”

Claude's Upgrade Feature: Artifact
There's also a key new collaboration feature called Artifacts, a dynamic workspace where users can edit and build on Claude-generated content in real time. This makes Claude's upgrade useful when working with programming code or documentation where the text needs to be updated with the latest information. Artifacts reflect Claude's role as generative AI evolves from a recommendation engine to a collaborative environment. While many assistants complete text based on written code, Claude's Artifacts takes this a step further by enabling seamless real-time collaboration.
Further improvements to come
Anthropic promises to make further improvements to Artifact available soon, including support for secure team collaboration and centralized knowledge management.
This gives Claude an edge over the current crop of AI assistants that run in integrated development environments (IDEs), such as paid versions of ChatGPT and Gemini, which have code execution capabilities, as well as GitHub Copilot, an AI assistant designed to work with Visual Studio Code and RStudio.Marketers who work with developer teams will want to see how Claude can benefit their teams.
The rest of the Claude 3.5 family
Things will get even more interesting as Anthropic rolls out the rest of the Claude 3.5 family. Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus are expected to be released later this year. The release of the AI model family has become essential to cover a range of applications, from small models suitable for mobile devices to larger models for extensive processing. This means tailoring the right model to the right use, from developers creating apps to marketers who need to integrate AI into their current applications and workflows. Marketers saw a similar approach when Google revamped its fast-growing AI platform under the name Gemini.
lastly
Claude's user base is growing rapidly, raving about its query accuracy and processing performance, which has enabled Anthropic to quickly secure and respond with start-up funding.
And it seems they're always innovating: Today, Anthropic announced some new features.
To put it simply:
- Projects: Organize your chat and knowledge in one place.
- Share: Show off your best Claude dialogue with your team.
- Artifact: We rolled out last week, Artifact is a parallel workspace where you can create and edit content in real time with Claude.
As for the future, Anthropic's growth isn't slowing down: CNBC reported that Anthropic has completed five funding rounds, the largest of which was backed by Amazon.
Meanwhile, as other models in the family are released, AI-savvy marketers will discover just how powerful Claude is in terms of productivity.
