Co-founder of OpenAI Ilya SutskeverAfter leaving the developer of ChatGPT last month, he has announced a new artificial intelligence (AI) company called Safe Superintelligence (SSI).
“I am starting a new company,” Sutskever wrote to X on Wednesday. “We will pursue secure superintelligence head-on, with one focus, one goal and one product.”
He described SSI as a startup that “pursues safety and functionality in parallel,” and said that it is evolving its AI systems while prioritizing safety.
Unlike other AI companies facing external pressures, such as OpenAI and Google, SSI will have a “single focus” in the sense that it won't be “obsessed with administrative overhead or product cycles.”
“Our business model means safety, security and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures,” he said, adding that “we can scale with peace of mind.”
Sutskever is Move to oust OpenAIco-founder and CEO Sam Altman was fired in November, but rehired within five days, a coup carried out alongside other board members over concerns about Altman's handling of AI safety.
Sutskever previously led OpenAI's Superalignment team with Jan Rijke, who also left in May for rival AI company Anthropic. The team was focused on guiding and controlling AI systems, but since the pair left OpenAI, powers have been decentralized.
“I have long disagreed with OpenAI's management on the company's core priorities and we have finally reached a breaking point,” Sutskever said upon leaving OpenAI.
Sutskever is founding the company alongside Daniel Gross, who oversaw Apple's AI and search efforts, and his former OpenAI colleague Daniel Levy.
The company has offices in Palo Alto, California and Tel Aviv, Israel.
