What is the difference between Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT?
Brian Fang of CNN
Monday's keynote saw two big AI announcements from Apple: the unveiling of Apple Intelligence (the name of Apple's own suite of AI features) and a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into many Apple devices. Where does one end and the other begin?
The key distinction seems to be between what Apple calls “world knowledge” and “personal context.” Where Apple Intelligence excels is in combining information about you and your relationships and using that insight to streamline your daily workflows, like pulling up old photos from an event or creating stylized AI-generated images of your contacts. Much of the processing of this data happens within Apple's ecosystem, on your Apple device or on special cloud-based Apple servers.
In comparison, Apple's integration with OpenAI will allow you to send ChatGPT specific questions about the wider world, and Apple says that while Apple Intelligence understands a lot about a user's personal life, other AI models like ChatGPT may be better suited to responding to prompts related to more general information.
ChatGPT prompts are sent to the platform on an opt-in basis – users must consciously decide to do so. ChatGPT can also be used to create documents from within some Apple apps.
Apparently, the partnership is just to give Apple users easier access to ChatGPT, rather than bringing its own AI capabilities to Apple devices. Notably, Apple said that ChatGPT can be used through Apple without creating a ChatGPT account, prompts sent to ChatGPT are not logged, and no data is stored. The company added that it is also working on integrating with other AI startups' models.
Therefore, the two presentations can be seen as rather complementary.
