Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh is the latest target of deepfakes. This is an alarming trend in which AI is being used to create manipulated videos. A recent deepfake video featuring Singh went viral and appeared to show him supporting a political party. The video uses authentic footage from Singh's visit to Varanasi, but his voice has been replaced with an AI-generated replica.
Singh himself addressed the issue on social media, warning fans with the message: “Deepfake se bacho dostonn” (Beware of deepfakes, friends).
According to reports, it has been confirmed that Mr. Singh has filed a complaint with the police, and the situation has become serious. A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau. A spokesperson said in a statement, “Yes, we have filed a complaint with the police and an FIR has been filed against the handle that was promoting the AI-generated deepfake video of Ranveer Singh.” said.
The video started with Singh's recent visit to Varanasi and showcased the actor's journey through the city's cultural and religious heritage. Singh teamed up with actor Kriti Sanon to grace the ramp as the centerpiece of designer Manish Malhotra's fashion extravaganza at Namo Ghat in Varanasi. A visit to the revered Kashi His Vishwanath temple provided a glimpse into their experience.
