South Korea's HMM plans to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) video analysis solution DeepEyes to strengthen ship safety management, the company announced on Friday.
DeepEyes is a safety monitoring system with AI video analytics designed to recognize and alert managers to sudden incidents such as fire, smoke, lack of worker safety equipment, and falls.
Despite their enormous size (equivalent to three to four football fields), large ships typically have a crew of 23 to 25 people.
As a result, shipping companies have traditionally relied on traditional CCTV systems to monitor both the interior and exterior of ships.
However, these CCTV systems lacked alarm functions, making effective safety management difficult.
To address this issue, HMM this week signed a supply agreement with GlobeAI, a startup founded by a Chuo University professor.
Regarding the significance of introducing DeepEyes, HMM stated that it will enable a quick response to safety incidents onboard ships, lead to the prevention of secondary disasters, and strengthen comprehensive safety measures.
HMM will install DeepEyes next month on one of the world's largest container ships with a capacity of 24,000 TEU.
DeepEyes will be deployed in a total of 15 locations on the ship, including the engine room and deck.
HMM plans to consider expanding the use of DeepEyes after verifying the effectiveness of the system.
