- From assigning personas to being polite, here are 12 tips for crafting the best ChatGPT prompts.
Since its release last November, ChatGPT has become ubiquitous.
At work, people use OpenAI products to develop code, create marketing materials, and create lesson plans. It has become so popular that companies have hired employees with ChatGPT expertise to make a profit.
And people are looking to chatbots in their daily lives for help with things like losing weight, setting a landing date, and slowing down aging.
However, ChatGPT does not always produce the desired results and the technique can be prone to errors and misinformation.
It all depends on the prompts you enter into ChatGPT.
“If you want to generate something really useful, just writing generic sentences is not enough,” Jacqueline DeStefano Tangola, a consultant who uses ChatGPT to win new contracts, told Insider. rice field.
Insider asked AI enthusiasts, ChatGPT coaches, and employees who use chatbots for tips on how to get ChatGPT to do what you want it to do.
Here are 12 ways to create better ChatGPT prompts.
1. Assign ChatGPT to a specific role
ChatGPT works best when you assign personas, such as specific job functions. Jason Griya, chairman of his AI Council at the University of Berkeley, teaching his customers how to use ChatGPT, said.
Rob Cressey, founder of AI coaching firm GPT Leaders, told Insider to “talk to ChatGPT like an employee” to accomplish a specific goal or task.
To do this, Gulya suggests writing a prompt to the user with a specific description of the persona they want the chatbot to play. The prompt begins with “act as a professor” or “act as a marketing professional” followed by a description of the desired outcome.
2. Be specific and give your bot only one task at a time
Once you give ChatGPT a role, create prompts so it can do a single task, like write a 300-word cover letter or create a recipe for a protein-packed dinner.
“Don’t ask for too much at once,” Cressey says.
If you’re a marketing professional and want ChatGPT to build a list of your emails, artist Peggy Dean, who hosts the ChatGPT course for creators, creates concise and detailed prompts, which she calls “power prompts.” recommended.
When you ask ChatGPT to outline your marketing campaign, she said, include your target audience, key features and calls to action.
If you asked the chatbot to create an email list and call to action, she said, she would say:
“You are an email marketing expert and your client [role] specialize in [offerings] for [target audience]. Your goal is to build a robust email list to accomplish the following: [goal].used by your clients [platform(s)] to reach their audience.come up with [details or quantity] Ideal call-to-action ideas [freebies or lead magnets] your client can provide. ”
“It’s important to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve,” Dean told Insider.
3. Adjust the prompt based on previous output
If ChatGPT’s response isn’t what you’re expecting, Cressy said, tweak the initial prompt and base that output on it. He calls this process “peeling the onion.”
“Don’t be afraid to improve your prompts,” says DeStefano-Tangola. “If the initial output doesn’t match your expectations, rephrase the prompt, add more detail, or clarify the context.”
If the answer to ChatGPT’s “Suggest me a good book” prompt is too vague, try narrowing it down to: “As someone who likes mystery novels with strong female protagonists, like Agatha Christie’s Miss Her Marple Her series, can you suggest other similar books?
4. Provide context
DeStefano-Tangorra said ChatGPT prompts should include context such as historical information, user profiles, settings or relevant details to guide the response. The more specific the better.
If you ask ChatGPT to “Suggest a recipe for dinner”, you’ll get generic output. Instead, DeStefano-Tangorra suggests adjusting that prompt to say: “I love trying new dishes, and I especially like spicy food, so could you suggest his menu for an exciting dinner for a get-together with friends next weekend?”
If you want ChatGPT to apply to your business, Cressy creates a “best practices document” that includes details about who you are, what you do, and what your brand voice looks like. I am proposing to That way, users can copy and paste information into the chatbot each time they start a new conversation.
Instead of asking ChatGPT to “create a marketing strategy,” the prompt should say, “I am a world-class company.” [role] who can help [target audience] for business growth. Our brand voice is friendly, positive, inspirational, brand safe, and conversational. Leverage my podcast to create a marketing strategy that will help build my brand on Facebook and Instagram. ”
5. Divide the desired output into a series of steps.
Prompts are best when they’re specific and contextual, but writing long prompts can backfire, says Gulya.
“Long mega prompts often don’t give the desired results,” he said.
To get around this, Gulya suggests splitting the desired output into a series of steps. That way, if the chatbot generates an error, the user can pinpoint exactly what the chatbot doesn’t understand.
”This allows us to validate each step before continuing and course correct if necessary,” says Gulya.
If your goal is to generate a widely read blog post using ChatGPT, the user first asks the chatbot which SEO terms will make the article most likely to appear higher in search engine results. You should ask them to investigate. Another prompt asks them to apply what they learned to their blog post.
6. Ask ChatGPT for advice on how to better prompt
To make sure the prompts are as thorough as possible, Dean suggested asking ChatGPT what other details the user needs to produce the best output.
To do this, Dean suggests adding a line to your prompt that follows the template: [desired outcome]which prompts should be shared with ChatGPT for best results?”
Once ChatGPT produces the output, tell the chatbot what you like and don’t like about the output, and “request additional results, edits and tweaks,” she said.
7. Prioritize clarity and accuracy
DeStefano-Tangorra suggests that ChatGPT users “explicitly state their expectations within the prompt” by adding precise words.
“Clear and specific prompts lead to more appropriate and helpful responses,” she said.
The prompt, “Use an oven and microwave to prepare dinner and compare and contrast” should read “Can you compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of using a conventional oven and a microwave to prepare dinner for your family?” should be adjusted as follows.
8. Use a thesaurus
To craft prompts accurately, Anna Bernstein, prompt engineer at generative AI writing tool Copy.ai, uses a thesaurus to find words that increase the likelihood of getting what you want from the chatbot. is proposing.
“Don’t give up on a concept just because the first prompt doesn’t give you the results you want,” Bernstein previously told Insider. “Often, finding the right word or phrase can solve what you’re doing.”
9. Be careful with your verbs
A thesaurus can help you find verbs that clearly express your intent. That way, the AI is more likely to fully understand the request, says Bernstein.
She said prompts with the phrase “summarize this” are more powerful than “rewrite this short”.
10. Be polite but direct
ChatGPT users may have different conversational styles, but Gulya believes that speaking to AI using polite and direct language, like writing a letter to a friend, produces the best results. He said he found out.
“It makes us more collaborative and more flexible in our thinking,” he said.
For example, when a college professor interacts with a chatbot to give advice on how to improve his skill set, Gulya responds with compliments like, “You’re brilliant for understanding the root cause of faculty anxiety about artificial intelligence.” I suggest writing a comment for
If your chatbot responds with a response you like, say thank you, for example, “That’s great. Thank you!” Followed by a request to modify the output.
11. Check and adjust the copy tone and reading level.
If you’re using ChatGPT to generate copy or captions for your social media posts, be sure to adjust the tone so your content resonates with your target audience, and use a chatbot to reduce your workload. marketing expert Ashley Kout told Insider.
Coote found that the best marketing copy is 5th or 6th grade content that includes “short sentences and paragraphs, conversational tone, and simple language.”
To do this, Couto recommends asking ChatGPT to “change the speaking level and tone” after it spits out a response.
12. Feed ChatGPT with Outlines
If you want ChatGPT to generate long posts, Cuto suggests giving the AI a specific structure and overview. She said the more specific the instructions, the better the results.
Below is one of the prompts Cuto uses to generate a company blog post.
“According to this story structure, 1. captivate, 2. build tension, 3. de-tension, 4. conclude by providing value — a 1,000-word story at a 5th grade reading level. I am writing in the first person. The following information.”
