WESTPORT — The quest to find traces of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe may actually end with Earth-bound algorithms.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently being explored by some of the smartest minds on Earth as to what it means for future life on Earth and its inhabitants.

A program sponsored by Wisemen of Westport/Weston next week could help decipher the technological advances—or threats—that AI poses.

“Realizing Artificial Intelligence” is the subject of a presentation by Emmy Award-winning journalist and former New York Times columnist David Roeg scheduled for Monday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Westport Library. To enroll in the free program, click here.

Artificial intelligence apps can render images of any object or scene that mimic the style of famous artists and photographers. Based on the user’s request, some can write almost anything from letters to research papers to software.

Fake or Future?

Pogue will speak at the Y’s Men program about the state of the art in AI technology and how he expects its uses to evolve, according to a press release. He also answers questions from viewers.

A Westport resident, he was a weekly tech columnist for The New York Times from 2000 to 2013 and a five-time Emmy Award winner for his corner of the CBS News “Sunday Morning” television show. He is also a New York Times bestselling author, he has given 5 talks at TED, and he has hosted 20 of his NOVA science issues on PBS.

Pogue has authored or co-authored over 120 books, including dozens of his 1999 technical series Missing Manual. His six books in the “For Dummies” series. 2 novels. Three best-selling “Pogue’s Basics” collections of tips and shortcuts. His new how-to guides “Unlock iPhone” and “Unlock Mac” and “How to Prepare for Climate Change” are out in his 2021.
