Suprema receives ISO/IEC 42001 certification for AI governance framework

Suprema has achieved ISO/IEC 42001 certification, the international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS), marking a milestone in the company’s approach to AI governance in intelligent access control and physical security solutions.

This certification confirms that Suprema has established a formal governance framework for how it develops, operates, and continuously improves artificial intelligence within its access control solutions.

Unlike certification, which assesses product performance, ISO/IEC 42001 assesses the organizational processes behind AI operations, including policies, responsibility structures, risk management, and monitoring practices. Suprema’s certification scope covers AI used for biometric authentication and identity verification across the BioStation series, BioEntry series, and BioStar platforms.

This certification is awarded following an independent audit by an accredited third party and provides external validation of Suprema’s AI governance practices.

The company said this certification provides greater transparency for businesses, governments, healthcare organizations and financial institutions to evaluate access control solutions during procurement and due diligence processes. As AI governance requirements continue to expand across regulated industries and the public sector, this certification is designed to support customers’ assessment of vendor governance practices.

Suprema said it leverages AI to improve the accuracy and processing speed of biometric authentication. The company added that the ISO/IEC 42001 governance framework is designed to scale with future AI capabilities while maintaining consistent standards for oversight and accountability.

The company also noted that this certification provides a foundation to address evolving regulatory requirements, including EU AI laws. Suprema said it continues to monitor the implementation of the regulation and respond to related requirements, as the High Risk AI Systems Mandate is scheduled to come into effect on August 2, 2026.

Suprema has previously obtained ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security management and ISO/IEC 27701 certification for privacy information management. By implementing ISO/IEC 42001, customers can evaluate security, privacy, and AI governance practices as part of an integrated framework, the company said.

“Our customers need to know that the AI in their security systems is not only accurate, but also responsibly managed and independently verified. Every certification Suprema pursues reflects the same belief that trust must be earned and it must be proven. We cannot simply tell our customers that the AI in our access control systems is responsibly constructed and carefully managed. We need independent verification to back that up. ISO/IEC 42001 is just that, and we intend to maintain and build on this standard as AI governance requirements continue to evolve globally.”
