Dr. Chinmei Jani joins CancerNetwork® In the studio, he will discuss various aspects of his work dedicated to advancing precision medicine in oncology. He highlighted ongoing research and research focused on artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools in oncological decision-making and overcoming immunotherapy resistance in lung cancer patients.
Regarding the application of AI platforms to oncology workflows, Jani detailed the research results presented at the conference.
Jani said AI will be a “useful and essential” tool for medical, research and healthcare implementation in oncology, but also noted where new methods could improve, including the ethics surrounding the use of AI.
“AI is useful for documentation and manuscript preparation, but there needs to be a layer of ethics so that it can be used as a tool to modify and refine AI,” Jani said. “But if you’re relying entirely on that, it’s not your research. We need to be more careful about that, too.”
In addition, Jani discussed various efforts in the field of thoracic oncology that he and his colleagues are leading to overcome immunotherapy resistance, leverage novel biomarkers, and improve early cancer detection to improve outcomes for lung cancer patients. These efforts, along with the introduction of new treatments such as tarlatamab dlle (Imdeltra) and strategies such as liquid biopsies, may help achieve the goal of turning lung cancer into a “chronic disease” where patients can live for decades, not just months or years.
Jani is a principal investigator in hematology-oncology at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
