Madonna believes AI in music is “the opposite of creating art.”
Singer Ray of Light has strongly condemned the use of artificial intelligence and believes there is too much pressure on musicians to build an online following rather than focus on their own work.
She told Vogue Italia magazine: “Painters and musicians and dancers and artists used to come together in the same place and work in a very pure space for each other. I cherish that experience very much.”
“Now I don’t do that anymore. I think about how many followers I have to get a record deal.
“That’s why in ‘Bring Your Love,’ we say, ‘Don’t try to distract yourself with numbers.’ For me, it was about trying not to think about charts or streaming numbers. Algorithms and artificial intelligence are the antithesis of risk-taking, and for me, that’s the antithesis of making art.”
The 67-year-old singer, who is also mother to children Lourdes, 29, Rocco, 25, David, 20, Marcy, 20, and twins Stella and Estelle, 13, prefers to “disappear” from social media and the online world when she’s working on new music to “fire her imagination” and find inspiration from real life.
“It’s been tough lately with my record and a lot of things going on with it. But I like taking breaks and disappearing because it stimulates my imagination.”
“I need quiet and I need days where I just connect with nature, my kids, and my horses.”
Madonna recently branded Instagram, which has more than 20 million followers, calling it “soul-destroying and mesmerizing” and admitting that spending too much time on the app makes her depressed.
She told Interview magazine: “When we look at Instagram for two hours, we think we’re actually with someone, which is a very disturbing thing to do.
“It’s both fascinating and soul-destroying at the same time.”
When asked if she doomscrolls, she said: “Sometimes I open Instagram and something pops up that moves me to the next visual. And I think, ‘What am I doing? I have 5,000 things to do. Just hang up.'”
“I grew up without social media, so I’m pretty disciplined when it comes to social media.
“I didn’t have Instagram until about 2018. I grew up without television. I’m not someone who gravitates towards distractions.
“Hell, I make lists every night, put post-its everywhere, and my day is filled with sometimes boring but very exciting activities.
“It’s true that if I look at Instagram for more than 10 minutes, I get depressed and don’t want to go there.
“Why am I giving this non-existent being power over my soul, my brain, my vision of myself, my vision of the world? Time is precious, and I’ve known that all my life. Time is precious. What can I do? What can I do?”
