No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you – this strange-looking sculpture teeth It’s moving. In fact, it’s running. Because it’s actually a robot – a robot.
The “legged metamachines,” as they are officially known, consist of spherical modules, each containing a motor, battery, computer, and a pair of arms.
Each module can independently roll, rotate, and jump. However, when connected, they can return to their original position when walking, running, or falling over.
They can even find new ways to locomotion even if they lose one or more limbs, for example when researchers cut off a limb to test the adaptability of a machine.
“Even if they sustain severe injuries that would be fatal to other robots, they can easily recover,” say the researchers who created the machine. “It will never stop” is what fans of a certain science fiction movie will think when they hear this.
terminator But Echo doesn’t stop there. This legged metamachine was created by a team of engineers at Northwestern University in Chicago, who used AI algorithms to evolve a robot with efficient and versatile movement.
“This is survival of the fittest, accelerated and realized by computers,” says project leader Sam Kriegman. I hope this algorithm isn’t called Skynet.
