TORONTO — A new report says 46% of Canadian business leaders surveyed are experimenting with AI without achieving a meaningful return on investment.

A report from BDO Canada says organizations need to leverage AI in ways that create measurable value, manage risk and help people adapt to new ways of working.

Only 18% of companies are actively integrating AI into their workflows and operations, and 27% of Canadian business leaders believe AI will have minimal impact on their organizations over the next four years.

BDO says the findings may indicate a visibility gap as AI is incorporated into business software, workflows and other systems.

BDO Canada’s national AI lead, Bill Siros, says the next gap will not be between organizations that are using AI and those that aren’t, but between organizations that are redesigning their work around AI and those that are funding disconnected pilots.

The online survey, conducted from March 31 to April 3, asked 520 Canadians who are Angus Reid Forum members and self-identify as senior business leaders.

The Research Insights Council of Canada, an industry group that promotes polling standards, says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error because they do not randomly sample the population.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 25, 2026.
