Artificial intelligence is impacting every aspect of our daily lives. While many are using it to generate videos, images, and even financial advice, others are exploring its most beneficial uses: advances in life sciences and medicine. This was the focus in the 90’sth Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Symposium on Quantitative Biology.
This May, hundreds of people gathered at CSHL to explore how AI can enhance biological research. Leaders in AI and technology interacted with luminaries from biology, drug discovery, and healthcare for a rare exchange of perspectives that enriched all sides. Questions about how to improve AI performance and efficiency were weighed against theories about how to rigorously and reliably interpret large amounts of data.
“Biology has gone from being data-poor to being data-rich,” reflected Terrence Sejnowski, a professor at the Salk Institute, a pioneer in computational neuroscience and AI. “That means we need new tools to analyze data, and new conceptual frameworks will emerge from that.” Here at the CSHL Symposium, we see them starting to take shape.
