Epic releases Fortnite video trying to launder its use of AI in Art Pipeline, but the artists I spoke to just didn’t get it

AI Video & Visuals

Yesterday I received an email from a friend with the subject line “Check this shit out” and I can confirm that he was completely right about the “shit” part.

The body of the email was simply a link to a video titled “.A look back at Epic’s art concept processMaybe it’s the title, but suggest This is a nod to Epic’s art concept process, the fact that it’s hosted by the VFX people and technical artists who work for the company. Conducted by Tim Sweeneymay tease out what its real purpose is:

If you don’t want to watch all six minutes, basically what happens is a few artists try to explain the creative process of creating something. fortnitefrom the first sketch to the finished asset/art piece. meanwhile slightly While useful in that it at least provides an overview of the process, it is also full of examples of what I generously call “hyperbole”, such as the work of others and the shortcomings of the AI technology being used.

This video is actually about Epic trying to launder the use of AI in their asset pipeline. very That’s a terrible job of it. This video was scripted and allowed to be released as is, but apparently Assumption Allay people’s fears and stay ahead of any “discovery” or criticism. like I saw yesterdaythe presence of this junk in video games is becoming a big “no thank you” from viewers.

But it fails miserably! When people say, “Oh, I drew a character, and then I press a button and the machine loads more of the same character, only this time it’s full of editing mistakes,” I don’t think there’s any art being made here, and I think I’m looking at a really bad piece of shit.

It’s just my opinion, but A guy who might be very interested in video game artbut not a video game artist. So yesterday I called on the following people: teeth Video game artists share their thoughts. Their ideas range from terrible to very funny.

There is absolutely no reason to use AI for this process. All you have to do is add a mushy “light painter” effect and whatever else you need to paint. Just weird.

The worst part is that despite the promise of “speeding up the process” everything takes time. We will try to fix the problem and display the prompt properly. Not to mention, the copyright and ethical implications are insane.

That’s very telling I went to see the UnrealFest agenda.this week, I counted 15 (!!!!) AI stories.

My impostor syndrome was cured when an experienced developer openly admitted to me that it was a hack using generative AI in their workflow.

I would have been heartbroken if any other studio was caught doing this. This company is known to be very publicly pro-AI and have staff on top of their CEO who uploads propaganda articles about how good Gen AI actually is.

I think it really comes across that VFX people and technology artists are representing and discussing processes used in completely different fields.

Isn’t part of the appeal of the artistic process the struggle to find a solution? Isn’t there that rush of finding something that works and then hitting the nail on the head? AI has its uses, but it would be foolish to involve some form of AI in every solution. Who asked for this? Why should everything be done faster?

I think this is a good example of an obvious use case that I could see from a mile away that enterprises would adopt.

I think it’s interesting that this video mainly shows how much they value the artist’s intent outside of the AI, but at the same time, what if these companies could replace the need for human steps and save money?I think they would.

I think the clear goal of these AI projects is to make us do what we do more efficiently. That’s what they (naively) call the “better” model.

It is a certain right to be faithful and to ignore the human touch. “We decided not to involve humanity in this step.” And in just that way, they took away the sense of wonder that many of us used to see in art, especially highly composite art like video games, but I’ve always loved exploring the nooks and crannies that people care about and put their love and craftsmanship into.

It is the hollowing out of humanity in art for the sake of efficiency.

Writing crappy AI prompts not only removes the personal aspect of the drawing, but it’s also completely incompatible with visual language, which is often difficult to explain in words, where the drawing is the result of someone’s accumulated skill, past failed drawings, years of practice, etc.

I think these tools are useful for: fortnitea game that constantly sucks up the charm of characters from other franchises and spits out their bones to use as meat puppets to be sold for money. That soullessness was already rampant, so why not commit to it fully and cut out the soul of the artist imprinted on the character design?

Being a concept artist has been my dream since I was a child, but this is different. This garbage is slowly eroding my passion for the work…Is it just adding my voice to the rest of the artists?

These are some of the messages I’ve received from video game artists, but it might also be helpful to show you what the top comments are under YouTube videos in the order in which they appear, just to illustrate that people’s resistance to this extends beyond industry and disease websites. Something like this:

Prompt: “Please do not change the design, only the rendering”

AI: Change design and rendering

Apparently, due to some circumstances, they changed the clip on the bag to a skull, added another pouch to the right side, and changed the color of the left hand.

>AI sees hallucinations

>Artist must correct errors

Laughter

This doesn’t help people. It helps reduce staff, overloads the remaining employees with work, and floods the market with slop. Anything that is easily produced in large quantities is of low quality. Only a few CEOs benefit from this.

you guys are completely crazy. The gen AI part of this completely took the concept out of the artist’s hands.

It didn’t listen to you either.

Please keep this shit out of our video games, thank you!
