The crime branch of the Assam Police has started a probe into a case in which some students of two Guwahati-based private schools circulated digitally altered images of 64 girls and teachers on social media for a fee.

Police said a case has been registered with the crime branch against at least two students for allegedly creating explicit content and selling images of female classmates and teachers for 50 and 100 pounds.

“We have recorded the statements of the principal, counselors and students involved in the distribution of explicit content,” Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain told reporters.

Jain said the people who exposed the deepfake incident are included in the ongoing investigation.

According to reporters, the accused students created explicit content and put it up for sale on the Telegram app.

On Friday (June 12, 2026), one of the schools suspended the student behind the incident and referred the matter to the Child Abuse Monitoring Committee and other appropriate committees.

The school said in a statement that it has a zero-tolerance policy against cyber-misconduct, bullying, harassment, misuse of digital platforms and any behavior that may adversely affect the well-being of students, staff and staff.

The school also called on all students and parents to refrain from spreading unverified information or spreading rumors.
