Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis developer clarifies use of AI in game, says AI is used to “get to the right answer faster”

Jeff Adams, Future Director of Experience at Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantismoved to reveal that the studio uses AI in game development, in an interview with Game Informer.

In case you missed it, following the game’s latest trailer at Summer Game Fest, it was revealed that Crystal Dynamics and co-developer Flying Wild Hog were leveraging AI in production. Now, Adams detailed the team’s use of this technology, saying that it was implemented to create placeholder assets to help with visualization. He said this will allow the team to:arrive at [the] get the correct answer faster

Let me give you an example of what that looks like. For example, at an early level of development, you have an idea for an object, but you don’t know if you want to take the time to build it. Generative AI tools allow you to visualize objects in the world. If it works, move to the traditional pipeline. From there, the team conceptualizes, builds, and ensures that the final game’s finished content is all human-created.

Adams went on to say that “It’s extremely important to us that our team has the tools to deliver the highest quality experience possible.”and add”our fans deserve nothing more

In a separate interview with IGN, Adams revealed that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set in the same world as the Survivor trilogy, but so far we’re only finding Lara Croft in her prime.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to be released on February 12, 2027 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is a complete overhaul of the original 1996 Tomb Raider, with Lara Croft embarking on a journey around the world in search of Scion, taking her to places like Peru and Egypt, where she faces off against everything from ruthless mercenaries to a giant Tyrannosaurus.
