In a new video from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explores “how to hear God’s voice clearly in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) and why that distinction is more important than ever.”

video”Faith, dignity, and human flourishing: Hearing God’s voice in the age of artificial intelligence” offers listeners the opportunity to be thoroughly taught by members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

“Will artificial intelligence replace God?” Elder Gong asks in a one-hour gospel workshop video now available on various church channels. “While that question may sound provocative, it is extremely important in an age where we rely on algorithms for answers, guidance, and even comfort.”

Elder Gong explains that while tools such as AI and chatbots may further assist individuals in their relationships with God, community, the natural world, and themselves, they can never replace them.

“Artificial intelligence can answer questions, but it cannot answer prayers,” he explains. “It can organize information, but it cannot provide revelation, covenant connection, or divine truth.”

But as with any technology, Latter-day Saints can wisely use AI as a tool to foster the four core relationships as disciples of Jesus Christ.

“Use AI wisely to deepen, not weaken, your relationships with God (you), yourself (me), each other (them), and the natural environment (it),” he teaches.

“Even in our personal lives, use AI for logistics and drafting, but don’t use it as a substitute for trusting relationships,” Elder Gong says. “Set boundaries. If you find yourself wanting to confide more in a chatbot than in a parent, leader, or friend, why not reach out to a real person who knows and loves you today, right now?”

“Start by knowing God’s plan for you,” he advises, recognizing that some people may seek AI’s advice on matters of human judgment and concern, as well as matters of the heart. “You are not a random data point for an emotionless algorithm.”

Elder Gong offers three “gospel-centered guideposts” for leveraging AI.

  1. Rely on the Spirit.
  2. Put your wisdom into practice.
  3. Choose reliable sources.

“Technology informs us, but without spirit, technology cannot change us,” he says. “Let us use every resource wisely to deepen our faith, strengthen our families, and lead us to experiences that renew the wonders of God’s world.”
