Google is completely revamping its search experience, and it’s not just YouTube. Like the rest of Google, YouTube’s search bar incorporates AI tools such as “Ask YouTube” that are believed to provide users with a more refined search experience.
“Ask YouTube allows you to ask more complex search queries, like asking for tips on how to teach your child to ride a bike or finding reviews from creators of soothing games to play before bed,” the company explained. “You can also ask follow-up questions to further narrow down what you’re looking for.”
YouTube compiles both short and long-form videos and generates responses.
US desktop premium subscribers can start using this feature and test the new tools through YouTube’s optional premium service.
The company also announced the addition of Gemini Omni, Google’s new AI video model, to the YouTube Shorts Remix and YouTube Create apps.
“Remixing with Omni gives users new ways to create and build on each other’s imaginations,” YouTube said in a press release. “This model better understands user intent and creates more consistent and meaningful storytelling, while also handling complex video and audio adjustments behind the scenes.”
Other companies, such as Meta and OpenAI, have experienced mixed reviews when promoting the use of AI in short videos. OpenAI has discontinued Sora, a social app that allowed users to post and share AI-generated clips. But YouTube seems to be rolling this out in a way that doesn’t really bring it to the fore.
YouTube is also expanding its similarity detection tools to creators over the age of 18, which is believed to help protect creators from being deepfaked with other people’s AI content. Creators can request that their AI video be removed if they believe it unfairly represents them. This feature is currently being expanded more broadly, so it remains to be seen how effective it will be.
