Amazon builds its own AI production platform and greenlights three AI animated series for Prime Video

Amazon MGM Studios and AWS announced the GenAI Creators’ Fund at AI on the Lot, an industry event held at Culver Studios.

The fund will provide filmmakers, digital creators, and technology startups with funding and access to an in-house AI production platform. Three animated series are already in production, but Amazon MGM Studios says no release date has been set for Prime Video.

Amazon did not disclose the size of the grant. Albert Chen, head of Amazon MGM’s AI studio, told Variety that all projects involve human actors and voice actors. The studio gave each of the three teams five weeks to create the pilot, a timeline aimed at proving that AI-powered production can move much faster than traditional methods.

Project Nala: Closed platform with models trained on MGM IP

The technical backbone is “Project Nala,” a platform built on AWS that is available exclusively to Amazon MGM and selected creators. Nala connects AI agents to tools like Maya, Blender, Nuke, Unreal Engine, and Adobe Suite.

This architecture is model independent. Each task is routed to the best AI model. Third-party video models are combined with in-house models trained on Amazon MGM IP. A “provenance tracking” system documents the origin of all content.

Amazon believes Project Nala can solve many of the problems plaguing current AI video pipelines, including inconsistent characters, choppy motion, and breaks in continuity between shots.

“One of the biggest complaints we hear from creators is that AI doesn’t do what you want it to do,” Cheng says. Current generators are made for social media, he said. “We are turning these models into tools that can be used in industry.”

Samira Bakhtyar, general manager of media and entertainment at AWS, summed up the strategic ambitions more broadly: “Amazon has quietly and methodically built the industry’s only end-to-end AI content creation ecosystem, from infrastructure to creative tools to creative content distribution and financing.”
