NEW YORK: New York University hosted Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the Islamic World League, for a lecture and discussion on the role of artificial intelligence in amplifying hate speech on social media platforms.
Saturday’s event brought together scholars and invited guests to consider challenges related to AI-generated content, online extremism, and the spread of misinformation.
The discussion focused on how artificial intelligence can be used to automatically generate text, images, and videos containing discriminatory or inflammatory content, and how algorithms can target users with divisive content designed to maximize engagement.
Participants also considered the role of bots and coordinated digital networks in spreading hate speech and misleading information, and the growing use of deepfake technology to manipulate audio and video content in ways that incite hostility against individuals and communities.
Mr. Al-Issa emphasized the role of social and religious organizations in combating hate speech, stressing the importance of understanding its causes and developing effective countermeasures based on research and research.
He also warned that recommendation algorithms on social media platforms could contribute to the spread of provocative and extreme content, as it often generates high levels of interaction.
Commenting on the legal implications of this issue, Al Issa said the use of AI to promote hate speech raises important questions about the balance between freedom of expression and the need to protect society from incitement and harmful content.
He added that there also needs to be greater clarity on the legal responsibilities of digital actors and technology platforms in this matter.
