IIT Kanpur has taken a major step in expanding access to higher technical education by launching four new online MTech programs under the second cycle of online postgraduate admissions.
This announcement was made by the Institute on May 15, 2026 through its Outreach Activities Office.
The move reflects the growing demand for expertise in rapidly evolving fields such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure development, clean energy and advanced power systems.
With this expansion, IIT Kanpur aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements.
New era course to acquire new era skills
Newly introduced programs include:

MTech in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

MSc Engineer in Construction Engineering and Project Management

MTech in Sustainable Energy Technology
These courses are designed to meet the needs of modern industries, where jobs and skill requirements are rapidly changing due to technology and innovation.
The program covers areas expected to dominate the future job market, from intelligent systems to renewable energy solutions.
Flexible learning, IIT quality
All four MTech programs are fully online and are Senate approved by IIT Kanpur. Course durations range from 2 to 4 years, giving learners flexibility.
This system is particularly useful for working professionals who want to improve their qualifications without quitting their job. Fresh graduates can also pursue these programs to gain advanced technical knowledge from one of India’s top engineering institutes.

Admission to the program follows a structured evaluation process.

Minimum CPI of qualifying degree 5.5 or 55%

Those who have obtained GATE qualification may be exempted from the entrance examination

Candidates with five or more years of relevant experience may also be exempt (subject to department regulations).

Sponsored candidates from government, defense agencies, or recognized organizations may qualify for an exemption
