As North and South Korea pursue contrasting approaches to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their militaries, the Korean peninsula is on track to become a testing ground for the promise and perils of algorithmic warfare.
Both countries are compressing their decision-making timelines in ways that have the potential to rebuild deterrence and crisis stability, from North Korea’s pursuit of AI-powered attack systems to South Korea’s push for networked “kill web” operations.
Their trajectory reflects broader global changes as the United States and China compete for AI supremacy, and the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East demonstrate how quickly these changes are occurring.
