Jensen Huang overturns dire predictions from AI leaders

AI For Business

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is tired of your AI buzz.

Discussing AI adoption on Thursday’s “Memo to the President” podcast, Huang said industry leaders should “be mindful” of how they talk about the importance of technology.

At one point, he mentioned Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s prediction that 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs could be replaced by AI in the next few years.

“These types of comments are unhelpful,” Huang said. “They are created by people like me, CEOs. Somehow, because they became CEOs, they adopted a God complex and before they knew it, they knew everything.”

He added: “I think we have to be careful and stay grounded in speaking the facts.”

During the interview, Huang also criticized claims that AI could destroy the world.

“To say nonsense like this is an existential threat to humanity when it’s not going to happen, there’s a 20% chance it’s going to be an existential threat, that’s ridiculous,” Huang said.

He was likely referring to Elon Musk, who made this claim during an appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast in February. Musk said humanity faces a “20% chance of extinction” from AI.

Although AI has permeated nearly every layer of the economy, little is known about the long-term impact this technology will have on the workforce and humanity as a whole.

Some AI proponents believe that this technology will make us more efficient, create more jobs, generate wealth, and solve all kinds of suffering. Others worry that it will replace humans as the workforce, isolate us from each other, and ultimately bring about some kind of apocalypse.

A striking example of this uncertainty is the so-called “Sirpocalypse”. Until recently, the idea that AI was bringing about the end of the once lucrative software-as-a-service industry was accepted logic.

But a series of earnings reports this week defied that logic. Atlassian, Twilio, and Five9 all reported strong results on Thursday.
