The social networking giant completed the acquisition on Friday, a spokesperson said. Mehta said the startup is “at the forefront of robotic intelligence, designed to help robots understand, predict and adapt to human behavior in complex and dynamic environments.” Financial terms were not disclosed.
The Assured Robot Intelligence team, including co-founders Lerel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang, will join the Meta Superintelligence Lab’s research arm. Staff will work closely with Meta Robotics Studio, a team launched last year to work on basic humanoid technology.
Meta is investing heavily in humanoids, future robots that can move like humans and assist with physical tasks. The emerging sector is gaining traction with many of the industry’s biggest companies, including Tesla Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Amazon.com Inc.
Mr. Wang was previously a researcher at Nvidia, and Mr. Pinto was a co-founder of Fauna Robotics until his retirement in 2025. Amazon acquired Fauna Inc. in March to strengthen its humanoid robot efforts.
Assured Robot Intelligence’s employees were concentrated in San Diego and New York. A Meta spokesperson said the group “brings deep expertise in how to design models and capabilities at the forefront of robotic control and self-learning whole-body humanoid control.”
Meta’s robotics team is working to develop in-house humanoid hardware and the underlying AI that powers it, with the aim of eventually leveraging the startup’s technology. This includes developing sensors, software and other technology for robots that will be made available within the industry and ultimately to a wide range of companies.
Bloomberg News reported last year that Meta’s goal is to provide what Google’s Android operating system and Qualcomm Inc.’s chips did to the phone industry by laying the foundation for other markets.
