The introduction of artificial intelligence in Australia’s telecommunications, media and online gambling sectors is progressing rapidly, with new ACMA research showing strong innovation as well as increased risk.
The media industry is using AI to personalize advertising and streamline content production. However, researchers and commentators have raised concerns that some uses of AI could amplify misinformation and disinformation. This can affect public trust in the news and raises concerns about unauthorized use of copyrighted material.
The gambling industry uses AI for predictive analysis and odds setting, personalized promotions, and detection of harmful and fraudulent activity. At the same time, researchers and consumer advocacy groups have raised concerns that AI’s role in targeted marketing could increase risks for vulnerable users.
The telecommunications industry is deploying AI to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and generate new revenue streams. The study found that AI can support more resilient networks by predicting failures and automating recovery. Some carriers are using AI to detect fraud in real time.
According to ACMA research, AI is enabling efficiencies across these sectors, but its adoption is also increasing calls from stakeholders for stronger governance, transparency, and safeguards.
The research was published in three separate reports published on the ACMA website.
