The United Democratic Front (UDF) has filed a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly circulating an AI-generated deepfake video against the party’s candidate in Haripud Assembly constituency in Alappuzha district.
UDF election committee chairman and whistleblower Anil B. Kalasil has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election campaign machinery is widely disseminating fake videos through social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook. It claimed that the video was created using AI technology to falsely attribute socially sensitive remarks to UDF candidates with the aim of causing religious polarization and disturbing public harmony in the constituency.
The front called on the EC to intervene to protect the integrity of the electoral process. It said the distribution of manipulated content is a direct attempt to mislead voters and influence public opinion through systematic disinformation.
It called on the EC to instruct cyber mobile phone authorities and social media platforms to immediately identify, remove and stop the spread of alleged deepfake videos. It also asked the police to instruct criminal cases against those responsible for creating and sharing the content, citing concerns about defamation and attempts to stir up social tensions.
