Sony acquires AI specialist Cinemarsive Labs to boost game graphics

Machine Learning

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on April 2nd that it has acquired Cinemarsive Labs, bringing the London-based computer vision team into its visual computing group. Founded in 2022, the startup specializes in transforming 2D images into voluminous 3D experiences using AI-driven technology.

The Cinemarsive team will focus on applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals and rendering techniques for PlayStation titles. The purpose of their work is “Unlocks a new level of visual fidelity for players.” According to Sony’s announcement.

The move follows recent studio closures such as Bluepoint Games in February and Dark Outlaw Games in March, and signals a pivot toward technology infrastructure rather than traditional development.

Cinemarsive Labs previously developed Parallax, a VR application that transforms photos into explorable three-dimensional environments. The technology supports platforms such as Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro, demonstrating cross-platform compatibility that benefits PlayStation’s broader ecosystem.

Last year, Sony’s Visual Computing Group began an effort to explore new rendering and streaming approaches. The acquisition of Cinemarsive expands the group’s capabilities with specialized neural network expertise for enhancing game graphics.

Financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, and the games or products identified as the immediate targets of the technology integration are not specified. This acquisition represents Sony’s ongoing investment in machine learning for graphics performance optimization. playstation 5 Hardware and future console generations.
