EU bans use of AI in official communications

The European Commission, European Parliament and European Council have banned the use of images and videos generated entirely by artificial intelligence (AI) in official communications, officials told Politico today, Anadolu newspaper reports.
This restriction is intended to protect credibility and public trust as synthetic media increasingly blurs the line between authentic and fabricated content.
“The footage and photographs we use and publish for use by journalists and for official information do not contain AI-generated content,” Thomas Renier said, stressing that “authenticity” remains a priority.
AI tools can be used to improve existing images, including increasing image quality, but fully synthetic images and videos are prohibited.
Experts say this cautious stance reflects legitimate concerns, but could limit its effectiveness in a fast-paced digital environment.
The move follows the European Commission’s investigation into X and its chatbot Grok under the Digital Services Act, which focused on recommendation systems and sexual images.
