According to EE Times Europe Magazine, the application of artificial intelligence in semiconductor defect inspection is progressing along two different architectural paths. These approaches are seen as potentially complementary, with one focusing on integrating AI directly into new inspection hardware and the other on correlating data across existing manufacturing environments.
Industry executives explain this difference as manufacturing plants grapple with increased physical complexity and massive amounts of data. The result is a shift toward viewing defect detection as a multilayered intelligence challenge rather than a single tool function.
One approach QuantumDiamonds exemplifies is deeply embedding AI within its own sensing hardware. The company’s system uses a quantum diamond microscope to generate magnetic field maps of integrated circuits. AI software then interprets these maps to reconstruct the current flow and identify anomalies such as short circuits or material defects. The method relies on physics-based machine learning to solve the inverse problem of deriving current from a magnetic field.
A key feature is the tight coupling between AI and hardware, which can reveal failure mechanisms hidden from traditional inspection. Currently, this method is used for sample-based offline analysis, but full in-line inspection capabilities are still years away. The long-term vision includes fusing data from multiple physical sources such as optical, X-ray, and magnetic sensing into a unified classification framework.
Alternative architectures, such as DR Yield, aggregate and analyze extensive data already generated across manufacturing plants. The company’s platform ingests numerical data from a variety of sources, including electrical test results, metrology, and equipment signals. Statistical and AI models then scan this data to detect early warnings of yield issues, focusing on anomaly detection across the dataset rather than defect classification itself.
This method specializes in multivariate correlations and identifies risks due to changes in relationships between parameters, even when individual measurements remain within normal limits. The software operates in near real-time, with data available within seconds or minutes. The company’s role is described as providing a layer on top of tool-specific analytics to connect signals across the factory.
Although these approaches have different starting points and timing, they are considered complementary. One extracts new physical insights from devices, and the other detects system risks by connecting data across the factory. Executives from both companies agree that the fab of the future will require multiple layers of AI working together, combining specialized tool-level intelligence with broader factory-level correlation.
This evolution is being driven by the overwhelming scale of data in modern manufacturing and the expansion of new physical sensing methods. This is moving defect detection to a layered architecture, where no single model has complete visibility, and from a point tool function to a system-level intelligence challenge.
