YouTube test replaces video title with AI summary

AI Video & Visuals

Google tests AI-generated summaries on YouTube feeds and replaces video titles with auto-generated summaries.

Some YouTube users are seeing video titles replaced with AI-generated summaries in the Android app. A report on Reddit instead showed an untitled video card with a collapsible overview box.

detail. The video thumbnail will remain, but the title may not be displayed.

  • The AI summary is displayed in an expandable text box below each video.
  • Users must tap to expand the summary to understand the content.
  • This test appears to be limited to YouTube on Android.

It looks like this. Here’s a screenshot shared by Reddit user GrimmOConnor:

why do you care. This further abstracts creator metadata and gives them less control over how their YouTube content is displayed. Titles are still important ranking and click-through signals. Replacing these with AI summaries can impact keyword targeting, brand voice, and intent matching, increasing the risk of inaccuracies that negatively impact performance.

context. Google is also testing AI-generated headline rewriting in search and may extend the same approach beyond Discover to YouTube.

  • Google has identified a “small” and “narrow” experiment in which search results replace original page titles with AI-generated versions.
  • According to Google, the goal is to improve query matching and increase engagement.
  • However, examples have shown that Google shortens and rephrases headlines, and changes their tone and meaning.

reaction. Early feedback suggests that the browsing experience is degraded. Expanding the overview slows discovery and adds friction to content selection. This goes against YouTube’s engagement goals.

what’s next. There has been no official confirmation from YouTube about the broader rollout. While the missing title could be a bug, the AI Overview feature is consistent with Google’s broader efforts in generative AI.

I saw it for the first time. We learned about this test from Android Authority.
