Aviva is extending its AI-powered underwriting summary tool to support individual critical illness (CI) claims, further advancing the use of generative AI across protection.
Insurers said the move would allow them to summarize most personal protection claims that require medical reports.
Aviva said the tool is already improving underwriting efficiency and turnaround time by allowing underwriters to evaluate applications more quickly at the point of entry.
This feature uses generative AI to analyze medical reports and create concise summaries, cutting the time it takes to review complex documents by about half.
The expansion into CI underwriting expands the scope of the tool to handle more complex cases with a wider range of conditions and risk factors. Aviva said testing showed high accuracy across these scenarios.

Chief underwriting officer Robert Morrison said the development reflects the company’s focus on increasing the speed and accessibility of protection.
He said: “This is another important step in using generative AI to make coverage insurance faster and easier for customers.
“Throughout development, we have focused on enhancing the underwriting stages that deliver the greatest material benefit to clients, advisors and underwriters in terms of both service and efficiency.”
Aviva added that its AI capabilities already support post-application audits, with plans to extend aggregation to income protection next.
The technology is designed to give more customers faster access to insurance and improve the efficiency of the underwriting process for advisors and providers, the insurer said.
