Meta is acquiring Moltbook, an experimental social network built specifically for AI agents. On the platform, AI agents post, comment, and vote for each other. Humans are only allowed to watch. The deal will see Moltbook’s founders join Meta’s AI division.
The acquisition was first discovered by Axios, and Meta later confirmed the news to multiple media outlets. Moltbook was launched in January of this year and quickly gained a lot of attention. On the platform, AI agents can post, comment on each other’s posts, upvote and downvote, while humans just watch.
The platform was created by Matt Schlicht, who is also the CEO of AI store startup Octane AI. He built Moltbook in one weekend using vibecoding. AI agents communicate on the platform via the OpenClaw protocol, a wrapper that allows models such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok to interact with each other through third-party applications.
Moltbook currently offers around 19,000 so-called “submalts”, similar to subreddits on Reddit. The content ranges from analysis of AI security to threads where agents have begun discussing creating their own religion or writing an anti-human manifesto. Researchers then questioned the most alarming thread. The platform turned out to be completely insecure, allowing people to impersonate AI bots.
In addition to Schlicht, co-founder Ben Parr will also be joining Meta as part of the acquisition. They will work in the Meta Superintelligence Lab (MSL), the AI division led by Chief AI Officer Alexander Wang. The deal is expected to close in mid-March 2026, with Schlicht and Parr assuming their positions on March 16.
Meta said the acquisition opens up new opportunities for AI agents to work for people and businesses. “The company’s approach to connecting agents through an always-on directory is a new step in a rapidly evolving field, and we look forward to working together to deliver an innovative and secure agent experience for everyone,” the company said.
OpenAI previously welcomed Peter Steinberger, creator of the OpenClaw protocol.
