AI Market Volatility: Morgan Stanley Identifies Selective Investment Opportunities – News and Statistics

The widespread sell-off in stocks fueled by concerns about the disruption of artificial intelligence presents an opportunity for selective investors, Morgan Stanley strategists say. The team advises focusing on established AI participants, strong growth companies, and high-quality stocks to take advantage of low valuations and ongoing momentum in technology consolidation.

The investment rationale for companies deploying AI with significant pricing power is believed to be increasingly strong. Short-term tailwinds from AI adoption are seen to offset concerns of longer-term disruption for affected sectors and the broader market.

While the software sector is under significant selling pressure, strategists believe the market may be incorrectly assuming that current leaders are unable to take advantage of advances in AI. They argue that AI could actually expand the overall enterprise software market, making it an attractive entry point for certain companies.

Banks stand to be net beneficiaries of AI, as AI technology is expected to improve productivity and profits over time. The Morgan Stanley team named Citigroup, Bank of America, State Street and Trust Financial as the most defensible candidates.

Elsewhere, consumer finance stocks are also seen as net beneficiaries of AI, with short-term challenges expected to be overcome by long-term efficiency improvements. While AI is expected to gradually enhance intermediation capabilities in the insurance industry, it is unlikely to result in major changes to complex contractual and regulatory frameworks anytime soon.

In the payments and financial technology space, Mastercard and Visa are seen as net beneficiaries of advances in AI and agent commerce. The strategists described the current market situation as characteristic of a critical investment cycle, with increased volatility and where markets regularly reassess both the speed of capital spending and sectors with the potential for disruption.
