The concept of AI actors usurping human actors may seem far-fetched now, but that’s the future McConaughey thinks. genuine McConaughey — We believe emerging talent should be prepared.
In a conversation with Timothée Chalamet, McConaughey said, “It’s not enough — it may be for you — but it’s not enough to just stand by and make a moral appeal saying, ‘No, this is wrong!'” “It won’t last long. There’s too much money to be made and too much productivity. It’s here.”
He and Chalamet spoke about AI in the entertainment industry with students at the University of Texas at Austin at a CNN and Variety town hall event. City Hall will be broadcast on CNN Saturday at 7pm ET.
During the conversation, McConaughey urged students to seek legal protection for their likenesses.
“Own yourself, your voice, your likeness, etc. and trademark it!” he said.
McConaughey said doing so would give people more control over their brands and the opportunity to be fairly compensated.
“So when it comes, not when it comes, no one can steal you,” McConaughey said. “They’re going to have to come to you and say, ‘Can I do it?'” Or they’re going to be in violation. And you have the chance to be your own agent and say: “Yes, for this amount” or “No.” ”
McConaughey, for his part, is already taking precautions.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the “Interstellar” actor has had eight trademark applications approved in the past few months. That included his iconic “Dazed and Confused” catchphrase, “It’s okay, it’s okay, it’s okay!”
“My team and I want to know that if my voice or likeness is used, it’s because I approved and approved it,” McConaughey told the Journal. “We want to create clear boundaries around ownership where consent and attribution are the norm in the world of AI.”
McConaughey’s lawyer added: “As we watch everyone fight over what to do about the misuse of AI, we now have the tools to stop someone from getting in their way or take them to federal court.”
McConaughey is also an investor in Eleven Labs, an AI-powered voice generation platform. Most recently, the company announced that McConaughey was using its technology to create a Spanish version of its newsletter.
