OpenAI is positioning Frontier as a response to what the company describes as a growing gap between what AI models can do and what organizations can deploy within their existing systems, governance structures, and workflows. Many companies have experimented with AI agents, but pushing these tools into production has proven difficult due to fragmentation across data platforms, applications, and security controls.
The platform will initially be available to a limited number of customers, with broader access planned in the coming months.
Major employers sign on as Frontier rolls out to limited customers
Several large organizations are initially adopting or piloting Frontier as part of their initial deployments. OpenAI counts HP, Intuit, Oracle, State Farm, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Uber as early adopters.
OpenAI also confirmed that dozens of existing customers are already piloting Frontier’s approach, including Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, Cisco, and T-Mobile.
After the release, Scott Rosecrans, OpenAI’s vice president of strategic pursuits, highlighted early company engagement around the release in a LinkedIn post. He writes: “My first three weeks at OpenAI have been a whirlwind, and it’s been very validation of the work we’ve been working with the team here to secure a launch partner for this release!”
Frontier is focused on moving AI agents from pilot to daily operations
OpenAI configures Frontier not as a standalone tool, but as an end-to-end system for running AI agents in production. The platform is built on the concept of “AI coworkers,” where agents are given access to a shared context, onboarding process, feedback mechanisms, and defined responsibilities.
Frontier connects siled enterprise systems such as data warehouses, CRM platforms, ticketing tools, and internal applications, enabling AI agents to operate with a common understanding of how information flows and where decisions are made throughout the organization. OpenAI explains that this shared context is critical to allowing agents to move beyond narrow task-specific use cases.
The platform supports agents developed in-house, provided by OpenAI, or integrated from third-party vendors. Agents can run across local environments, enterprise cloud infrastructure, or OpenAI-hosted runtimes without requiring organizations to replatform existing systems or abandon previous deployments.
Governance and evaluation are central to advancing enterprise AI
Control and monitoring are positioned as core elements of Frontier. OpenAI highlights built-in mechanisms for evaluating agent performance in real-world production tasks, allowing teams to monitor results and identify areas where quality improves or deteriorates over time.
Each AI agent operates with a defined identity, explicit permissions, and clear boundaries, enabling deployment in regulated or sensitive environments.
