OpenAI We have appointed John Sugihara as Head of AI Success Engineering for Asia Pacific and tasked with building and leading a team responsible for customer adoption, technical readiness, and post-implementation outcomes.
This move reflects OpenAI’s increasing focus on enterprise execution as organizations move from AI experimentation to large-scale production use.
Sugihara shared an update on LinkedIn, marking his move from BCG X, where he previously served as Managing Director and Partner, leading GenAI efforts across APAC.
In his new role, Mr. Sugihara will be responsible for overseeing AI success engineering teams across the region that support customers deploying OpenAI’s chat, Codex, and API products. His responsibilities include guiding organizations from initial implementation to large-scale implementation, aligning AI capabilities to business workflows and delivering measurable outcomes.
Sugihara wrote, “After six years at BCG and working with great people, I joined OpenAI with another great group of people.” He added: “AI will change us in many ways, and I want to be at the table for these conversations.”
This appointment signals OpenAI’s intention to formalize its customer success and deployment capabilities globally, especially as enterprise customers seek applied support beyond access to AI models.
From consulting-driven GenAI to enterprise execution
Prior to joining OpenAI, Mr. Sugihara spent over three years at BCG X in Singapore, where he led GenAI’s operations and partnered with clients to identify and implement AI-driven value across business units. Reflecting on the transition, he wrote: “I am grateful for the experience as I will carry much of what I learned at BCG with me in the future.”
Early in his career, Mr. Sugihara also worked on venture building efforts, including working at Mandai X, where he focused on launching and expanding new businesses in response to rapid technological change.
In a previous LinkedIn post, he wrote, “I think a new standard is being set and many companies will be left behind much sooner than they think.”
Mr. Sugihara confirmed that building AI success engineering capabilities will include aggressive adoption across the region. He said his team “has a lot of work to do this year” and that he is “looking for great people to join my team across Asia Pacific.”
For the EdTech and enterprise AI sectors, this appointment highlights a broader trend toward investment in local expertise, customer success, and deployment support as AI tools become embedded across education, workforce training, and organizational operations.
