ChatGPT Ads, TeraWave Satellites, PwC CEO Questions AI

AI Video & Visuals

Hello. Welcome to ComputerWorld’s 2-minute technical briefing. I’m your host, Arnold Davis, reporting from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Here are the top IT stories you need to know on Tuesday, January 27th.

First, from ComputerWorld, OpenAI is testing ads on ChatGPT and could launch ads as early as February. As is common with web-based advertising, advertisers initially pay per impression rather than per click, according to a report in the Information.

The trial will give each advertiser access if they are asked to spend $1 million or less over a period of several weeks. OpenAI does not yet offer self-service advertising tools. Free users and the $8/month ChatGPT Go tier will see ads at the end of answers labeled as sponsored.

From NetworkWorld, Blue Origin announced a space-based network for enterprises and governments called TeraWave. This network architecture relies on approximately 5,400 satellites distributed in both low and medium Earth orbit. It promises up to 144 Gbps and 6 Tbps across the constellation.

Deployment will begin in Q4 2027 as fiber difficult or risky diversity. Analysts note that capacity sharing, weather handovers and IPsec needs can complicate DIV deployments. And from CIOs, PwC’s 29th Annual Global CEO Survey suggests that enterprises are increasing their AI spending, even though ROI remains uncertain.

More than half of CEOs don’t realize the revenue or cost benefits of AI. Approximately one-third measure measurable revenue increases. The report warns against orphan pilots and innovation theaters and urges companies to scale AI in line with their strategies.

CEOs also report growing trust concerns and heightened cybersecurity risks, with many making plans for security upgrades. For more enterprise technology news, visit ComputerWorld, CIO, NetworkWorld, and CSO Online. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to the TechTalk YouTube channel.
