Spotify rolls out “AI-driven playlists” that allow users to enjoy the “atmosphere” in their own way

Popular music streaming platform Spotify introduced a new feature on Thursday, January 22, 2026 that gives you the “vibes” to be yourself.

Spotify has rolled out Prompted Playlists, an artificial intelligence-powered feature, in the US and Canada that allows premium users to customize playlists using their own listening habits and commands.

“We always hear from our listeners that they love playlists, but creating one yourself can be daunting,” said Surinna Ong, Spotify’s global editorial director, in a statement announcing the news.

Following its success in New Zealand, the expansion is the latest in a series of AI-powered updates at the Swedish streaming platform, which aims to attract more users from the free tier to subscription plans.

“Listeners don’t just want Spotify to understand them. They want to actively shape their experience,” Molly Holder, vice president of product personalization, said in a media briefing.

Spotify said the new feature positions users as active participants who use their words and intentions to direct the algorithm, rather than passive recipients of suggestions provided by streaming platforms.

The company’s editors have created sample prompts that can be found under the Ideas tab.

Unlike previous features such as AI playlists, Prompted Playlists allow users to set “rules” for the generated content and can be scheduled to update daily or weekly, so the music is always fresh, the company said.

The move follows Spotify’s announcement earlier this month that it would increase the price of its monthly premium subscription plans by $1 to $12.99 starting in February in the U.S., Estonian, and Latvian markets.

“Listeners don’t just want Spotify to understand them; they want to actively shape their experience,” says Spotify.

Spotify’s “AI Prompt Playlist” for Premium Users:

The feature is currently in beta for premium subscribers in the US and Canada and will roll out until the end of this month, with the company planning to begin testing it for other regions in December 2026.

Playlists can be curated for activities such as “30 minutes of high-energy pop or hip-hop at a steady pace for a 5K run, followed by relaxing songs to cool down,” and you’ll also be prompted to include specific artists and time periods.
