Brooklyn-based composer, producer, and puppeteer tristan allen Announced Flare’s Osuni (March 27, via RVNG International Airport), the second chapter of a mythological trilogy about the transformation of man into god through the discovery of fire. To commemorate the announcement, Allen shared the lead single and video. “Act 1: Garden” The track serves as an intimate entrance into a world defined by meticulous sound design and puppetry. Recorded over four years in a Brooklyn apartment overlooking a cemetery, the album deploys the creation myth across four sonically compelling acts, utilizing a vast arsenal of toy instruments, ocarinas, and wordless vocals.
“Act 1: Garden” begins in a wispy silence, then a complexly textured landscape begins. Allen constructed note-for-note tracks from flute recordings, from a Balinese sling to a bird-shaped ocarina, and a music box was sampled and rearranged to double over Virginia Garcia Ruiz’s haunting vocal melody. The instrument is intentionally fragile and “less stable,” featuring a dying Casio SK-1 and a harmonium, bridging the gap between the simple wonders of childhood and a strange, changing reality. The accompanying video, directed by Travis Hood and Ross Mayfield, features Allen’s “Puppet Ballet,” which premiered at La MaMa in New York City, and showcases basswood stick puppets illuminated by a custom internal LED system.
story of Flare’s Osuni It follows the title character from the land of the living to the realm of shadows. The Origin of Fire is born after Osuni discovers an ember in the dragon’s belly, which ultimately leads to his ascension to the God of Fire. Allen will make his debut in 2023. Ting Iso and Dawntaking the director’s perspective, the project feels more human and vulnerable. By fusing acoustic instruments, electronic processing, and ancient puppetry, Allen invites listeners to experience “the origins of myth itself” through an emotionally powerful portal of sound.
