Malaysia has suspended access to Elon Musk's chatbot Grok due to AI-generated pornographic content, the country's technology regulator announced on Sunday.

The decision comes in the wake of global backlash after it was revealed that Grok's image creation feature allowed users to sexualize photos of women and children using a simple text prompt.

According to The Japan Times, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced on Sunday that it had ordered the immediate restriction of Grok for users in the country after the tool was used to create sexually explicit, obscene and grossly offensive material, including images that had been doctored without consent.

The regulator said that despite prior involvement and formal notification to X Corp and xAI, the content included women and minors.

According to MCMC, existing safety measures on the platform were inadequate and companies relied heavily on user reports rather than built-in protections. The regulator added that access to AI tools will remain blocked until the necessary changes are implemented and verified.

The move came a day after Indonesia became the first country to deny all access to Grok. Elsewhere, the controversial tool's image-generating capabilities are limited to paid subscribers, a move criticized by European officials and tech activists for failing to address concerns about sexual deepfakes.
