Generative AI could help you lose weight in the new year

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 5, 2026 (Globe Newswire) — If you're considering setting a goal to lose weight in 2026, we have good news. Generative artificial intelligence can help. MIT Sloan School of Management Professor Katherine Tucker's recent study, “Building an AI ecosystem or prioritizing personalization? Evidence from a field experiment” (a research paper published in SSRN) found that using customized generative AI in an online weight loss program improved weight loss outcomes for participants in her study, marked by lower body mass index (BMI).

Key findings: TGen AI has a positive impact on weight loss

  • Study participants who engaged in personalized generative AI content saw positive weight loss results, with some no longer being classified as obese.
  • Customized generative AI in online weight loss programs could be a low-cost intervention to address the obesity epidemic.
  • These tools are scalable to promote weight loss, a generalizable finding from the study, allowing participants to access more information and support more quickly.

Tucker and her co-author, Linyi Lee from Singapore Management University's Lee Kong Chian Business School, partnered with Asia's Fortune 500 companies to determine whether generative AI could help address the obesity epidemic through direct messaging and personalization, and to what extent personalization achieved through AI could lay the foundation for community-building among people with weight loss goals. The number of participants who were no longer classified as obese based on BMI went from 6 to 17 of the 416 participants in Tucker's study.

“Weight loss is a huge challenge. If it were easy for all of us to lose weight, we would just lose weight,” Tucker said. “Interventions like surgeries and injections are expensive, so the fact that digital tools like AI can have some effect is great. This is evidence that very small interventions can be cost-effective in terms of changing behavior.”

Through the company's online weight loss boot camp conducted via group chat on an instant messaging app, participants interacted, shared experiences, and supported each other throughout their weight loss journey. The program offered AI-powered generative food analysis tools to provide real-time personalized dietary recommendations, analyzing user-uploaded meal photos to provide customized suggestions to help make healthier food choices.

“Our findings demonstrate that generative AI can be an effective tool to address obesity without the need for medication or the resulting side effects, and reduce associated medical costs and health inequalities,” Tucker and co-authors wrote. “By providing real-time, personalized, actionable feedback, generative AI has helped fill the knowledge gap and made weight loss education more accessible.”

Why the combination of customized AI and a supportive community is the key to weight loss success

In their research, Tucker and co-authors discovered significant limitations of AI in promoting weight loss success. In other words, AI doesn't help build communities.

When trying to use AI to build community among participants, researchers found that the number of active users actually decreased and dropout rates increased. For now, researchers believe that focusing on personalized personal experiences through generative AI is more effective than pursuing large-scale ecosystem development.

“It's very tempting to think that if you have a technology that lowers the cost of content generation, like generative AI, you can use it to quickly build communities, quickly build ecosystems and networks,” Tucker said. “What our research shows is that there are no real shortcuts. We build ecosystems because people crave real connection. It's just cheaper to produce content.” [with generative AI]does not mean it serves any community-building purpose. ”

Personalized, low-cost, non-judgmental content and support are key to successful weight loss. and A strong community that holds people accountable and recognizes both wins and challenges is equally important. The two need to work together for individuals to see successful weight loss results, Tucker said.

“I think what we’re showing is that in the era of generative AI, technology can certainly help with information retrieval, reminders, prompts, all these great things, but you can’t really use technology to replace that community,” she said. “At the end of the day, generative AI can’t replace the benefits of having a community of people supporting you on your weight loss journey.”
