Ahead of the holiday season, WhatsApp is rolling out a wide range of updates aimed at enhancing communication and creativity on the platform, with the introduction of missed call messages standing out as the most notable feature, according to a report by Moneycontrol.
This new feature allows users to leave short audio or video notes when they miss a call. This option appears directly on the call screen and attaches a note to the missed call itself, allowing for quick follow-ups without having to go back to the chat window. WhatsApp announced that the feature is designed as a modern alternative to voicemail, allowing users to quickly share information when live calls are unreachable.
The company has also expanded the role of MetaAI within WhatsApp. It says it has introduced upgraded image generation capabilities using models from internal research at Flux, Midjourney, and Meta, allowing for more detailed and sophisticated visuals. These tools are aimed at users who want to create personalized holiday messages and custom graphics for chat. Additionally, WhatsApp has added the ability to turn still photos into short animated clips, allowing users to describe desired movements through text prompts, eliminating the need for a separate editing app.
The calling feature has also received some upgrades. WhatsApp said it will automatically highlight active speakers in group video calls, improving clarity during multi-participant conversations. Voice chat now allows for light reactions such as cheers, allowing users to respond in real time without interrupting the discussion. These reactions appear briefly during a call and are intended to support informal feedback.
On the desktop version, WhatsApp introduced organizational improvements with a new media tab that consolidates documents, images, videos, and links shared between chats and makes it easier to find old files. Link preview has also been improved with clearer cards designed to help users quickly rate shared web pages.
According to WhatsApp, status updates have been enhanced with new creative tools. Users can now add music lyrics, apply interactive stickers, and include question prompts in their status posts. Contacts can respond directly to these questions, increasing engagement. Similar question prompts have now been extended to Channels, allowing creators, brands, and organizations to gather quick feedback from their followers during live events and announcements.
The company said these updates reflect Meta's broader efforts to integrate AI-driven creativity, call improvements, and content organization improvements directly into the everyday messaging experience.
