The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), has produced a new engineering report on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on media.
This report is the result of the Task Force on AI Standards in Media, launched in 2020, and is the latest version of SMPTE. engineering report Released in 2023.
It begins with a technical understanding of AI and machine learning (ML), followed by a discussion of the impact these technologies can have on the media landscape. The report then moves on to consider AI ethics and concludes with a discussion of the role standards can play in the future of AI/ML.
“AI in the media industry is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and the SMPTE AI Task Force remains committed to keeping up with this change,” said Thomas Bause Mason, SMPTE Director of Standards. “Revisions to the Engineering Report reflect new developments such as Model Context Protocol (MCP), enhanced security considerations, open source for AI, and new frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001. By incorporating these updates, we aim to provide the industry with clear guidance on interoperable AI practices for AI/ML and media workflows.”
