Improving power distribution with AI, machine learning: Khattar

Machine Learning

Power Minister Manohar Lal Qatar said on Sunday that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) will be at the core of building an intelligent, consumer-centric and self-optimizing electricity distribution network.

Speaking at a two-day national conference on digital technologies in the power sector held at Delhi's Bharat Mandapam, the minister said AI and ML applications such as smart meter analytics, digital twins, predictive maintenance, theft detection systems, appliance-level insights, automatic power outage prediction, and GenAI-based decision support can significantly improve consumer experience and operational efficiency.

He praised the strong participation from industry, states, innovators, academia and technology partners, noting the various solutions presented by DISCOMs, AMISPs, technology providers and home automation companies.

The Minister called for closer cooperation and urged all DISCOMs to work with stakeholders to build a smart, reliable and consumer-focused distribution system. He added that engaging consumers and combating misinformation about new technologies is equally important, and public support is essential for large-scale adoption.

He said the AI and ML-based solutions presented at the conference demonstrated how technology can rebuild trust in the sector by improving household consumption management, proactively preventing power outages, protecting loyal consumers from the burden of power theft, reducing losses and optimizing power purchase costs.

He said these digital tools could enable DISCOMs to reinvest in stronger infrastructure and contribute to India's emergence as a leader in digital power reform.

Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal said the ministry remains committed to expanding digital systems and supporting the deployment of AI and ML solutions that deliver tangible operational and financial benefits.
