On Thursday, Meta unveiled an AI product that no one would demand, but many could predict. It's an Instagram-like feed from AI Video Slop. Known as Vibes, AI Video Feed is not a standalone app as it is built into the Meta AI app. However, if it takes off, Vibe could be an app that allows creators and users to generate, share and remix AI-Only videos. In the meantime, Vibes believes, as Meta explained in a blog post, “want to find creative inspiration and make it easier to experiment with Meta AI's media tools.”
Vibes is very similar to Instagram and other social media apps. This allows you to upload short form video content and share it online. You cannot upload your own videos. You need to generate them with Meta AI tools. Alternatively, you can get an AI video that someone else has created, change parts with AI, select new music tracks, add your own video by adding captions. You can then share your work with friends and followers. Meta also said that videos from the Vibes portal can be cross-posted to Instagram, Facebook stories and reels.
Why does Meta need a vibrator?
AI Slop is already popular on platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok. Some of that may be good, but it's not the main format of content that users want to see on apps like Instagram. Therefore, dedicated locations away from human-made content are a good start. What's more, the main reason for creating projects like vibes is that AI photos and video content gets viral on a daily basis. ChatGpt's image generation model went viral earlier this year thanks to Ghibli Art, bringing millions of new users to Openai. The Gemini app became the most downloaded iPhone app a few days ago, and the Nano Banana AI video model has driven a surge. Meta appears to be aiming for such virality, especially as it overtakes the big names of Openai, Google and other AI spaces.
That said, Vibes does not use Meta's proprietary AI video generation model to create short videos. Instead, Meta's Alexandre Wang said in a thread that the company uses mid-journey and Black Forest Lab AI tools for the atmosphere of the early version, but continues to develop its own models behind the scenes. The Vibes platform could potentially take a peek into the future of AI content. This could be a significant revenue stream once it passes through the current phase of AI slops. AI video generation tools can provide virtually endless entertainment, while platforms like Vibe can assist with the process.
