US tech giant Nvidia has announced that it will invest up to $100 billion (£73 billion) in Openai, the company behind ChatGpt.

Nvidia said Openai will supply the high-performance chips needed for the processing power required by expert AI (AI).

Called “strategic partnership” by Nvidia is the latest move by two well-known high-tech companies in the Global AI Race, where China is an emerging rival.

The announcement comes after a series of high-profile investments by NVIDIA. This includes a $5 billion investment in Intel and a £2 billion investment in the UK AI sector.

Nvidia said the latest investment will be directed towards expanding Openai's “next-generation AI infrastructure” data centers.

Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang said the funding would mark “promote the next leap and the next era of intelligence.”

Both companies said they are already working with a wide network of collaborators, including collaborations with Microsoft, Oracle, Softbank and Stargate, that focus on creating “the world's most advanced AI infrastructure.”

With over 700 million active users per week, Openai said the new partnership with Nvidia “advances its mission to build artificial general information that benefits all humanity.”

He added that details will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
